How Zodiac Compatibility Works

Zodiac compatibility starts with the four elements. Each star sign belongs to fire, earth, air or water, and the way those elements interact is the biggest clue to how two people get on. Signs of the same element understand each other instinctively. Fire and air feed each other, and earth and water nourish each other, which is why those pairings tend to flow. Fire with water, or air with earth, takes a little more work, because the two see the world quite differently.

The second layer is quality, or modality: whether a sign is cardinal, fixed or mutable. Two cardinal signs can compete for the lead, two fixed signs can both dig in, and two mutable signs can drift without direction, so a mix of qualities often helps a relationship find balance.
